A lot of talks have been going on in the IT industry about Windows 7. Surprisingly, instead of being a definitely new Operating System, Windows 7 has come out to be just like its predecessor, Windows Vista. But with promising enhancement and improvement.

Windows 7 Graphical User Interface

Microsoft has chosen a different path on launching their new product this time. Instead of promising the “Wow” factor in their new Operating System, Microsoft, especially Steve Ballmer was saying that Windows 7 will be just like the last one (Windows Vista), but better.

A far cry when they launch Windows XP before.

Let us look at what is new in Microsoft Windows 7, briefly.

Windows 7 has Improved Graphical User Interface
Windows 7 looks a lot like Windows Vista. But that is not a bad thing. Just as Windows Vista borrow heavily from Windows XP before. The only enhancement in the User Interface area of Windows 7 that everybody been talking about is when you hover your mouse cursor over a taskbar button will bring up horizontal preview of thumbnails of each documents open in the application. Hovering over those thumbnail preview will bring full screen preview of the document. The taskbar button can also be drag around freely.

Windows 7 provide some New Applications
Most talk about in the applications department are the “Sticky Notes”. Notes can be posted around your desktop and then gathered to a virtual corkboard. If you create a new note, it will be saved automatically.

Windows 7 have Better Security
Same old news. Every new Operating System from Microsoft will have better security. This time the great leap would be in peripherals using the USB port. This time, you can set a group policy that will force USB drives to be encrypted before files are being copied. You can also disable USB ports through the Windows 7 Operating System.

Windows 7 is Less Annoying
This time the User Account Control (UAC) enforcement tools can be adjusted from Always Notify to Never Notify. Windows 7 UAC can also be setup to only notify the user when programs try to install software applications.

To sum it up, the enhancement are useful, but as a big leap from another Operating System to another, it is not enough to make people brimming with excitement to switch to the new Operating System. Microsoft might as well release a Service Pack to Microsoft Vista and included those enhancement with it.

Microsoft have announced that Windows 7 will be ready for Christmas. Unfortunately not this Christmas, but next year, Christmas 2009.

This differ from what Microsoft have been telling the media before, that Windows 7 will not be ready at least until year 2010. If Windows 7 ships in 2010, it will be 3 years after the official release of Microsoft Windows Vista.

Some industry observers speculated that by trying to release Windows 7 on Christmas 2009, Microsoft is trying to copy the success of Windows XP, which was officially launched on October 2001, just in time for 2001 holiday shopping spree.

Whether Windows 7 will continue the success of Windows XP or not, we will just have to wait and see.

Shocking as it may seems, 7000 people have downloaded the new Windows 7 from several torrent sites such as Mininova and The Pirate Bay.

A report by CNET have confirmed this. The Windows 7 version that are being downloaded from torrent sites are the Windows 7 build 6801, the one without the new taskbar enhancements. CNET also reported that according to some user who have downloaded Windows 7 from torrent sites, and have tested the new Operating System from Microsoft, most were not impressed by the features in Windows 7.

Meanwhile, quoting another user post on The Pirate Bay by the handle “rapion125″ ,

“This is a STABLE release. It is not a buggy version that BSODs every few minutes. It’s fully functional, and I will use this over Vista because despite being in pre-beta, it still kicks Vista’s ass.”

Looking from the total of downloads of Windows 7 build 6801 from those torrent sites, we can only assume that expectations are high from Microsoft Windows users on this new operating system from Microsoft.

Will Microsoft deliver, or dissappoint us again is for time to tell.

Microsoft have been facing heavy criticism by the Chinese government following their no WGA release late monday that will blackout desktop background after 60 seconds of usage.

In badxp previous post on Windows XP blackout screen with no icons, the same action have been implemented in China, and the Chinese are being offended by the new Microsoft WGA blackout screen. A lawyer wrote in “China Daily” that Microsoft have been considered engaging in an illegal activity within the Chinese law.

Even Cheng Chong, the Director of China’s software trade group, China Software Industry Association (CSIA) make a statement on Monday saying that what Microsoft has done is very offending and the Whole China Industry must take the matter seriously.

Microsoft when contacted still defending their action, saying that their (Microsoft) goal is to help the customers determining whether the software installed in their computer are genuine or not.

Asus CEO, Jerry Shen has announced that Asus Eee PC will come with Windows 7 instead of Windows Vista in the second half of next year.

Regarding to the previous post, where Windows 7 will support two touch screen notebook and claimed by Asus that they will ship notebook with two touchscreen functionality with Windows 7, the latest news that Asus Eee PC will come with Windows 7 is not a surprise to the Industry.

I would say that Asus is moving on the right track with the future implementation of Windows 7 on their hardware.

Windows Vista came with a built in CD Burning features, but since there are a lot of better freeware CD Burning applications for Windows Vista, you might want to disable Vista built in CD Burning.

This will require you to get your hand dirty with Windows Vista Registry Editor. Be advised that editing, tweaking or playing with the registry can lead your system to serious trouble. Make sure to backup your registry before following the steps below to disable Windows Vista built in CD Burning.

To disable Windows Vista built in CD Burning:

1. Go to start menu > run
2. Type “regedit” without the quote
3. At the registry editor, navigate to
   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer
4. Right click on the left pane, and create a new DWORD (32bit) key
5. Type NoCDBurning without the quote.
   
6. Double click on NoCDBurning and enter the value as “1″.
7. Close Registry Editor
8. Log off and then log in again for the changes to take effect.

This steps will Disable Windows Vista Built In CD Burning. To re-enable Vista Built In CD Burning, just change the Dword value to “0″.

Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer has revealed that Windows 7 will support Multi touch user interface.

This fact was made more interesting by ASUS claiming that they will ship new notebooks that have dual screen, with both screen having touchscreen functionality in the first quater of next year. This notebooks will have touch screen on both side and will ship with Windows 7.

If Windows 7 really does support Multi Touch user interface, and ASUS will ship their dual touchscreen notebook as claimed, we can be sure that other manufacturer will follow ASUS dual touchscreen notebook, and this design could be the future of mobile computing.

Talk have been circulating on the net about the release of Vista Service Pack 2 before the launch of public beta Windows 7 in mid December this year.

It also have been confirmed that Microsoft have been delivering a beta version of SP2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 to some of the selected Microsoft hardware and software partner. Microsoft has also put up a page on “Information about Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista Service Pack 2″ at their website.

Although there are no details available on the features of the new Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, there are claim that Microsoft will integrate Hyper-V with the Windows Server 2008 in the release of the Service Pack 2.

What makes me wonder if whether Microsoft will integrate and introduce some of the features of Windows 7 in the incoming release of Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.

Sometimes disabling Task Manager in Windows Vista can prove to be useful in securing your Windows Operating System. This tutorial will show you how to disable Task Manager in Windows Vista.

To disable Task Manager in Windows Vista using Registry Tweak, follow these steps:

1. Go to Start Menu
2. Go to “Run”
3. Type “regedit” without the quote to run Registry Editor
4. Go to
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\system.
5. Go to the right pane of Registry Editor, right click and create a new DWORD value
6. Name the DWORD value “DisableTaskMgr” without the quote
7. Set the value to “1″
8. Save and restart your computer

The process above will Disable Task Manager in Windows Vista. To undo the the process, just change the value of “1″ to “0″.

It is official that the next Microsoft Operating System codename “Windows 7″ will be call Windows 7.

A post from Windows Vista Blog by Mike Nash has stated that they will call the next version of windows, currently codenamed Windows 7, as Windows 7. This is a first for Microsoft Operating System, as the all the previous version of Microsoft Windows Operating System final name are call not with their codename.

For example, the Operating System by Windows codename “Whistler” are named Windows XP, and “Longhorn” turn out to be Windows Vista.

Nash explain by referring the cause of Windows codename “Windows 7″ to be call Windows 7 due to the fact that this is the seventh release of Microsoft Windows Operating System. It seems that things could not got simpler than that.
